There are very few books really good books that feature motorcycles and riding at their heart and core. The team here at Vintage Motorcycle Insurance is always on the look out for new motorcycling reads as they pop up. Well, a new book is out that is truly fantastic. It’s a memoir called Big Sid’s Vincati, written by Matthew Biberman, a professor of literature and creative writing at the University of Louisville. Biberman’s father, Big Sid, was a legend in the legendary world of Vincent motorcycles. His diagnostic and tuning skills were nothing short of genius, and Vincent owners from all over the globe sought him out to tune their bikes.
But this book is about much more than making Vincent Rapides, Shadows, and Lightnings go fast. It’s about family, and the often volatile relationship between a father and a son. Though Matthew is not as gifted as his father mechanically, and though Big Sid is not nearly as educated as his son, the duo connects over their shared love of motorcycles. Biberman pulls no punches, writing unflinchingly about the turbulence, bitterness, fighting, and ultimately the love, appreciation, and shared respect that binds these two men together as they endeavor to install a Vincent V-twin in a Ducati frame (ie a “Vincati”).
This is truly a fantastic read, even for you Ducati buffs who weep over the thought of a vintage Ducati frame being chopped up to fit a British engine
